University of St Andrews
The University of St Andrews is Scotland’s oldest university, with 600 years of history. Approximately 30% of students are international. The university has been ranked third best in the UK by The Guardian and has been named University of the Year twice by The Times and the Sunday Times.
The institution is made up of three colleges: United College, St Mary’s College and St Leonard’s College, which collectively comprise 18 academic schools. In addition, the university has one of the most extensive university library collections in the UK, including significant holdings of books, manuscripts, historical documents and photographs. The library collection contains over one million volumes, including more than two hundred thousand rare and antique books.
One of the most notable traditions is the wearing of the red academic tunic, usually worn on formal occasions and during the “pier walk”. This walk involves students walking along the harbor pier and returning along the upper path. The student union is home to more than 190 societies and clubs, which organize a variety of events and activities for all interests.
