George Mason University
George Mason University (GMU) is a public research university located in Fairfax County, Northern Virginia, near Washington, DC. The university is named after George Mason, one of the founding fathers of the United States.
GMU manages $149 million in sponsored research projects annually, starting in 2019. In 2016, the university was ranked among the “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”.
Mason supports several student-run media outlets through the Office of Student Media, including:
– Quarto Poder: Website and weekly student newspaper.
– Phoebe: A magazine that publishes original works of literature and art every year.
– WGMU Radio: Broadcasts a wide variety of music, talk, sports and news programs. WGMU is also the flagship station of the George Mason men’s and women’s basketball teams, part of the Go Mason Digital Network.

Academic English

Unlike Brazil, there are no entrance exams in other countries. Admission for international students is usually determined by academic performance, a good level of English, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, references, and good results on standardized tests (IELTS, TOEFL, SAT). In the United Kingdom and Australia, the Foundation program is mandatory for Brazilian students who have completed high school. It lasts an average of nine months, and it is possible to enroll on various dates throughout the year. In the US and Canada, Pathways is a great option for entering excellent universities, as it is a preparatory program with university credits. It lasts between six and twelve months, with enrollment dates throughout the year.
